Prohibition Chicken, a full-service restaurant and bar, has opened up in Old Town. It is a family-style eatery of comfort food, with the addition of a “speakeasy” bar where people have to make reservations and go through a door that looks like a phone booth in the back of the restaurant; the bar serves more than 50 types of alcohol and the restaurant is open seven days a week with live music on the weekends, according to the press release.

As one would expect, the main menu is mostly chicken which you can get crispy-fried, pecan smoked, hot-chile fried and other various types. Each entree comes with four sides, two hot and two cold. The sides include but are not limited to potato salad and mac and cheese. Along with chicken, there are other meat courses such as steak and grilled trout. You are not allowed to split a chicken with anyone so if you’re with someone who doesn’t eat a lot, this might not be the place for you.

The prices are fairly expensive; the main courses range from $10-$31, with dessert priced at from $3.50 to $7. Additional sides are $4 extra. The menu also offers mocktails for those who don’t drink alcohol, however, the downside is that the food servers go into extremely long speeches about how the menu works and where the meat comes from. It also lacks a kids menu and the prices are not listed on the menu anywhere customers would normally look as they’re located near the bottom.

According to co-owner Roger Kaplan in the release, the chicken is grown in the Dunbar Hollow Farms and Beeman Family Ranch which allows for antibiotic-free and humanely-nurtured chickens. The craft cocktails are made by people who seem to be genuinely interested in what they’re doing and the outcome can be seen and tasted as they are made with fresh ingredients bought from the local farmers market.

Prohibition Chicken offers a new twist on old-fashioned drinks and serves excellent chicken with a heaping amount of home-style sides. The ambience in the dining room is spacious and chatty and provides the perfect place for a family outing or a date night. The next time you’re in Old Town, make sure to stop by the restaurant and check out what it has to offer.
