As the Lady Farmers head towards the tail end of district, hopes are high for a strong close to the season. Head Coach Charlotte Jones said despite her team’s record [8-17 overall, 3-9 in district 6-6A], she is confident that they have what it takes to be a good team.

“The biggest challenge for us, as coaches is to get the girls to believe that they can compete,” Jones said. “Challenging each team every week gets harder, so the girls need to step outside their comfort zone.”

The Lady Farmers did just that last Friday as they won against Allen at home. The Eagles currently hold fourth place in district with a 7-5 record.

“It felt like we were finally putting everything together and we were finally working as a team,” senior Alex Shumway said. “We put all of our differences aside and just played basketball.”

Tomorrow night the Lady Farmers are matching up against an undefeated-in-district Plano West. The Lady Wolves were recently ranked fourth in the state by a Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

Shumway said she hopes the girls can work together in their matchup against the Lady Wolves.

“We have a lot of potential we just haven’t put it all together,” Shumway said. “We have had a lot of drama and issues, but we’ve gotten closer because of it.”

The Lady Farmers top scorers are sophomore guard/forward Jakeiya Morgan [averaging 12.2 points per game], junior Naomi Hawkins [7.4 ppg], and sophomore point guard Sharmaine Harper [5.2 ppg].

Jones praised the play of Morgan and Harper and said they are crucial players for the Lady Farmers this year.

“[Morgan] sees the floor very well,” Jones said. “She is very offense-oriented and has done a lot for us. Harper is more of the creative type, but she gets things done.”
