Beating Trinity and Marcus, losing to Timber Creek and Arlington, placing second in the Richardson Roundup and sixth in the Arlington Invitational, the boys wrestling team has had a fair start to its season.

“We’re doing well,” head coach Noel Peterson said. “We’re a young team this year but yeah we’re doing good.”

The boys have had some challenges to overcome this season such as losing players due to injuries and having freshmen and sophomores make up half of the team. However, Peterson believes that all the team needs to improve is gaining experience and increasing mat time. But this doesn’t discourage senior three time varsity captain Chris Hamill.

“We’ve all started to come together pretty recently,” Hamill said.

Hamill has been one of the captains of the team since his sophomore year. In between the pressures of having to be one of the best wrestlers and making sure everyone is on weight all while managing the team, he didn’t realize the true implications of what being a captain meant until this year.

“You have to be what keeps your team together,” Hamill said. “And if you can’t be that, you’re not cut out to be a captain.”

Peterson agrees.

“[The older members need to] show leadership and they do,” Peterson said. “Chris is a phenomenal captain and so is Jojo. They do a good job of leading by example and working hard.”

The team is competing in the Tri State Classic today and Saturday, and the team has high hopes for success.

“I’m the defending Tri State champion,” Hamill said. “And I’m planning on bringing gold back home again.”

The boys are set to wrestle today at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 8 a.m. at Lake Highlands High School.
