Farmers to face Arlington Martin in regional semifinals

Junior A’Leecia Bell (27) prepares to field the ball during the game against Southlake Carroll on May 8.

After a nail-biting series against the Denton Guyer Wildcats, the Farmer softball team finds itself one step closer to the coveted state tournament.

Making it to the regional semifinals, the Farmers will be facing the Arlington Martin Warriors tonight at Argyle at 6 p.m. Lewisville and Martin are two of 16 teams left competing in the state. This will be the third series that the Farmers have played at Argyle thus far.

Junior outfielder Nicole Nelson said that, with more experience at the field, the Farmers will have a slight advantage.

“We’re used to the field now, so it’ll be easier,” Nelson said.

This weekend the Farmers will be facing a stacked Warrior team with multiple returning starters. Much like Lewisville, this is Martin’s third year to appear in playoffs.

After a perfect 10-0 district record, Martin won the district title this year for the third consecutive year. In the playoffs, the Warriors have taken down Brownwood, El Paso El Dorado, and Wolfforth Frenship to reach the semifinals. Top performers of the Warrior clan include senior Krista Rude [left-handed hitter with .684 avg. according to Dallas Morning News], sophomore Olivia Reams [.630 avg, 2 HR, 2 RBIs], and sophomore Lacy Mann [.578 avg, 2 HR, 16 RBIs]

Mann also provided support for the Warriors in the circle this year with a 7-3 record and a 2.78 earned run average. Martin will most likely look to her to start the best of three series off tonight.

Last weekend the Farmers defeated Denton Guyer in the third game, of a best of 3 series, 2-1. Maribeth Gorsuch struck out 10, while Mikayla Corbin helped out with an RBI. Junior Tommi Goodman and senior captain and three-year veteran Gaby Vasquez both had multi-hit games as well.

Vasquez said that last week was the hardest series thus far.

“It was definitely a tough one, but we pulled through as a team,” Vasquez said. “The last strikeouts were definitely the most instense.”
