History and Information

The English Premier League was founded on Feb. 20, 1992 and has been the face of English football since. The campaign officially began on Aug. 15, 1992 and started off with 22 clubs

During 1992 and the League beginning to grow more popular, there have been six clubs to present the best style of football: Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Premier League has a point system to accurately tell what teams are in which place. Winning a game will earn a team three points, getting a tie earns one point and a loss earns zero points. The average points tallied at the end of each season is 71.3 points for the top four teams, and 35.1 points for the bottom three relegation teams.

Top five teams in 2023-2024

Kicking off the 2023-2024 season, the current top five teams competing for the Premier League Title, known as the “Title Race,” are Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur. The top four teams are able to qualify for next season’s Champions League and fifth place is eligible to qualify for next season’s Europa League.

Bottom three teams

The bottom three teams are a different story: Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United. After the season is over, those bottom three teams will get relegated back to the English Football League Championship, which is a tier lower than the Premier League.

Podium Teams

The current podium teams are all competitive this year. Starting with Liverpool, they have had an unbelievable start to the season. They are currently 14-6-1 (W-D-L), with their only loss being against Tottenham Hotspur. Their most recent game was against Bournemouth, taking home a 4-0 win, taking their three points in the standings. Liverpool fans have high expectations for every game. They will play Chelsea Wednesday January 31st, and fans are already betting Liverpool will comfortably take the win home.

Next is Manchester City sitting in second place. This team was last year’s Premier League champions. Man City is currently the best performing team in the league and has won the Premier League three years in a row. Last season was the teams best performance in the last three years. They won “The Treble,” meaning they won the Premier League, the Champions League and the FA Cup. Their current record for this season is 13-4-3 with their last game being 3-2 against Newcastle. They ended up winning and took three points. Their upcoming game on Wednesday January 31st will be against Burnley and fans, without a doubt, say they will win.

Concluding the podium is Arsenal. Sitting in third place with a 13-4-4 record, they have always fought for that first place finish. Arsenal have always been in the top five finishers, and without a doubt, Man City is their biggest competition. They came second at the end of the season last year, barely losing to Man City. Arsenal is craving for the Premier League title with their last championship being in the 2003-2004 season. They could still be on route for winning the title with their last game ending 5-0 against Crystal Palace and their most recent game ending 2-1 against Nottingham Forest.

With the season ending on Sunday, May 19, 2024, fans can only get more excited about who ends up winning the title. The Premier League is unpredictable and anything could happen every time a game is played.
