Based on Jane Austen’s classic novel, the parody book “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” was published in 2009 by Seth Grahame-Smith. Burr Steers directed an adaption to the book, and “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” hit theaters on Friday.

Just like the book, the movie is set during the Victorian period in England and it does a good job explaining the origin and history of the time period up to the point that the audience is introduced to the characters.

This is illustrated very well through the use of a stop-motion animated sequence meant to resemble early European political illustrations. For example, posters and signs of the time period were shown to make public declarations and messages about certain issues. This just goes further to bolster the overall esthetic of the film.

The movie is a romantic action horror thriller with a bit of comedy thrown in. The comedy suffers simply because a lot of it seems like the actors are just trying too hard to be funny. The only actor in the film who really plays the comedy aspect well is Matt Smith. The strong suit of the movie overall lies in the action scenes which are all well directed and choreographed, and they’re very enjoyable to watch.

Crazy enough, the love story aspect of the film really offers a good contrast to the over the top action of the main story. The acting is a mixed bag of upper B-list to bottom A-list actors who all do a pretty good job with the material that they’re given. Some of the more exceptional actors and actresses in the film are Sam Riley, Lily James, Bella Heathcote, Douglas Booth and Matt Smith. The cast just goes to further the overall experience of the film and adds another level of enjoyment to the movie as a whole. The story is a good mix of the original source material of Pride and Prejudice and the armies of the undead.

While it seems kind of paint by numbers at times, it’s still pretty enjoyable. Overall, the movie deserves a solid 3/5. If you enjoy Victorian romance dramas and zombie decapitation, this is the movie for you.
