District 5-6A preview

The varsity football team followed up its undefeated first place district performance in the 2022-2023 season with a 6-1 record and a second place finish in its 2023-2024 campaign. After a first round exit in a close 18-17 loss against Allen, the team now heads into a district with three new faces. These are the seven teams the Farmers are set to face in district this year and how they have performed throughout the non-district span of 2024.
Sept. 27 – Marcus Marauders (3-0)
Sept. 27 - Marcus Marauders (3-0)

At: Marcus Marauder Stadium

Head coach: Mike Alexander (4-7 at Marcus)

Last season: 4-7 (4-3 in district), Lost to McKinney 52-31 in the first round of the playoffs

Last five against Lewisville:

2023: Farmers 14-3 Marauders @ MHS

2022: Farmers 17-14 Marauders @ LHS

2021: Marauders 40-27 Farmers @ MHS

2020: Marauders 58-38 Farmers @ LHS

2019: Marauders 48-42 Farmers @ LHS

Players to watch:

Offense: Senior running back Isaiah Keliikipi (district rushing leader)

Defense: Senior inside linebacker Brock Golwas (verbal commit to Texas Tech)

The big number: The Farmers have now won back to back “Battle of the Axe” rivalry games for the first time since back to back wins in 2001 and 2002.

Random knowledge: The Marauders have a total of 10 sacks to start the season and they all came in their week one matchup against Keller High School

Non-district games:

14-10 Win vs Keller High School (2-2)

47-35 Win vs Arlington High School (2-1)

31-20 Win vs Pearce High School (2-1)

The rundown: Unlike their 0-3 start last season, the Marauders have started the season at an undefeated 3-0. The Marauders have a new starting quarterback heading into this season and sophomore Colton Nussmeier has started off the season by completing 35 of 61 passes for 568 yards, seven touchdowns and a single interception. Nussmeier has protected the football at an excellent rate unlike the Marauders last season that had a total of 15 interceptions and only 20 touchdowns to show for it. After wide receiver Karic Grennan and linebacker Joaquin Nevarez graduated last year, senior wide receiver Rhett Garza and senior linebacker Brock Golwas have stepped up for the Marauders. The Marauders greatest strength is their run game led by senior running back Isaiah Keliikipi, compiling 452 total yards and four touchdowns for the Marauders offense. Head coach Alexander returns and has led Marcus to a better start than his first year with greater playoff aspirations than last year.

Oct. 4 – Braswell Bengals (1-2)

At: Max Goldsmith Stadium

Head coach: Kent Laster (second year at Braswell) (5-8 at Braswell)

Last Season: 4-6 (3-4 in district) Missed playoffs

Last five against Lewisville: First time matchup

Players to watch:

Offense: Senior running back Moses Adelowo (leads team in all purpose yards and touchdowns)

Defense: *no stats according to MaxPreps*

The big number: Braswell steps up relatively new compared to the rest of the district. Head coach Laster heads into his second season leading the staff and the school is only heading into their ninth football campaign.

Random knowledge: Head coach Laster led University High School to their first playoff win since 2009 and has over 10 years of experience on a football coaching staff. As head coach at Central High School, student participation increased in the football program.

Non-district games:

46-42 win vs Boswell (0-4)

49-42 loss vs V.R. Eaton (1-2)

36-26 loss vs Royse City (2-2)

The rundown: Laster has firmly established the Bengals ground and pound offense in their first three games with a whopping 73 carries averaging about 8.9 yards per carry. Senior running back Moses Adelowo leads the backs with a total of 343 rushing yards and an average of 11.8 yards per carry as well as 37 yards through the air. Compared to their 24 total pass attempts, this game will be a test for the Farmers defensive line, especially after giving up 189 rushing yards against the Rockwall Yellowjackets. As such a young program, Braswell continues to grow and improve and with a potentially very dominant running game, they can look forward to more improvement as this season progresses.

Oct. 11 – Flower Mound Jaguars (3-0)

At: Neal E. Wilson Stadium

Head coach: Brian Basil (44-43 at Flower Mound)

Last Season: 5-5 (3-4 in district) Missed playoffs

Last five against Lewisville:

2023: Farmers 34-7 Jaguars @ LHS

2022: Farmers 28-21 Jaguars @ LHS

2021: Farmers 33-24 Jaguars @ LHS

2020: Farmers 51-21 Jaguars @ FMHS

2019: Jaguars 34-30 Farmers @ FMHS

Players to watch:

Offense: Sophomore quarterback Noah Spinks (district leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns)

Defense: *No stats according to MaxPreps*

The big number: The Jaguars last season with a positive record was their 2019 season with a record of 8-4 (5-2 in district) and that was also the last season they beat the Farmers. This may be something to keep in mind heading into their matchup.

Random knowledge: Coach Basil spent 10 years at MacArthur high school prior to Flower Mound and has been named a Dallas Cowboys coach of the week.

Non-district games:

50-48 win vs Bowie (1-3)

38-0 win vs Wylie (1-3)

21-17 win vs Lake Highlands (1-2)

The rundown: The Jaguars run a very high-powered offense with an efficient air raid passing game led by quarterback Noah Spinks, as well as a strong rushing attack spearheaded by senior running back Marcus Simpson to complement it. Both defenses will be tested against high powered offenses and this game will most likely be decided by which offense is slowed down most rather than completely shut down. After missing the playoffs last year, the team’s 3-0 start is a great improvement and the stats show the true potential this team has with playoff hopes being as strong as ever.

Oct. 18 – Coppell Cowboys (3-0)
Oct. 18 - Coppell Cowboys (3-0)

At: Max Goldsmith Stadium

Head coach: Antonio Wiley (15-1 at Coppell)

Last season: 12-1 (7-0 in district) Undefeated in the regular season and lost in the third round of the playoffs 52-45 vs. Byron Nelson

Last five against Lewisville:

2023: Cowboys 49-28 Farmers @ CHS

2022: Farmers 38-3 Cowboys @ CHS

2021: Farmers 38-15 Cowboys @ LHS

2020: Farmers 39-14 Cowboys @ CHS

2019: Farmers 35-10 Cowboys @ CHS

Players to Watch:

Offense: Senior quarterback Edward Griffin (committed to Baylor)

Defense: Senior linebacker Weston Polk (committed to Kansas State)

The big number: Coach Wiley has brought the Cowboys their first victory over the Farmers since 2013 and in dominant form too. The Wiley regime is up one on Lewisville and the Farmers have the opportunity to even the score with home field advantage.

Random knowledge: The Cowboys have won 18 straight regular season games.

Non-district games:

31-10 win vs Sachse (3-1)

28-27 win vs Waxahachie in OT (2-2)

72-33 win vs Bowie (1-3)

The rundown: The Cowboys run a balanced offense between the run and passing game which has brought great results for them under Wiley. This equal balance shows shades of the Rockwall offense that was able to play at different tempos and keep the Farmers defense on their toes. Senior quarterback Edward Griffin is the physical representation of this offense’s versatility, accumulating 649 passing yards as well as 212 rushing yards. Being flexible on defense and minimizing this offense is key to slowing down the Cowboys. Senior linebacker Weston Polk has been a do-it-all tool for the Coppell defense as he leads the defense in tackles (22) and tackles for loss (3). Keeping him away from the ball and shutting him out of plays could be the difference between a breakaway rushing touchdown and a loss of yards on a run. After back-to-back first round exits in the team’s last two seasons, the Cowboys look to break the glass ceiling holding them back from pursuing a deeper playoff run.

Oct. 25 – Hebron Hawks (2-1)

At: Brian Brazil Stadium (The Woodshed)

Head coach: John Towels (12-11 at Hebron)

Last season: 5-5 (3-4 in district) Missed playoffs

Last five against Lewisville:

2023: Farmers 32-10 Hawks @ HHS

2022: Farmers 31-17 Hawks @ LHS

2021: Farmers 37-35 Hawks @ LHS

2020: Farmers 66-18 Hawks @ HHS

2019: Hawks 38-14 Farmers @ HHS

Players to watch:

Offense: Junior wide receiver Tyler Hoke (Leading district in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns)

Defense: Senior outside linebacker Bo Onu (committed to Baylor)

The big number: Despite the four game losing streak against the Farmers, the Hawks lead in head to head matchups 11-7.

Random knowledge: Coach Towels is the second coach in the history of the Hebron Hawks after coach Brian Brazil.

Non-district games:

48-31 win vs Dallas Jesuit (1-2)

59-16 loss vs Southlake Carroll (4-0)

34-33 win vs Lancaster (1-3)

The rundown: Similar to last season, the Hawks offense leans on their best pass catchers to create plays and gain momentum for the offense. This year, that pass catcher is junior wide receiver Tyler Hoke who has accumulated 389 receiving yards and five touchdowns and has come to average an explosive 21.6 yards per reception. The team’s running game is led by junior running back Ayson Mccray-Jones who has gained 287 yards and averages 5.1 yards per carry. Ultimately, this Hawks offense will perform based on the performance of Hoke. The Farmer’s defense will need to key in on the passing game and limit as many explosive plays as possible to keep Hoke and the Hawks under control. After losing to the Farmers last year as well as missing the playoffs, the Hawks hope to turn this game into a meaningful push to gain a spot in the playoff picture.

Nov. 1 – Guyer Wildcats (2-1)

At: Max Goldsmith Stadium

Head coach: Jim Jones (first season at Guyer)

Last Season: 7-4 (5-2 in district) Lost in the first round of the playoffs 35-21 vs. Coppell

Last five against Lewisville: First time matchup

Players to watch:

Offense: Senior quarterback Kevin Sperry (committed to Oklahoma)

Defense: Senior defensive tackle Xavier Ukponu (committed to Wisconsin)

The big number: Guyer is 64-21 in away games and 84-30 in district games.

Random knowledge: QB Kevin Sperry is now at his third high school. Prior to Guyer, he played at both Rock Hill High School and Carl Albert High School.

Non-district games:

35-30 win vs Aledo (3-1)

38-19 win vs Martin (1-3)

49-28 loss vs North Crowley (4-0)

The rundown: Guyer runs an extremely balanced offense that has attempted 79 passes and 90 carries. Although, outside of starting senior running back Sterling Schneider who is averaging 7.4 yards per carry, the offense seems more effective when passing the ball with 14.7 yards per completion. Guyer’s defense excels in tackling, having 11 players accumulating double digit tackles and a total of 31 tackles for loss. Scoring on this defense will take persevearance and more than just explosive plays. Slower and more methodical drives may be a common pattern in this matchup. With an early playoff exit last season to a district rival in the Coppell Cowboys, the Wildcats need to adapt in these district matchups and learn to overcome the disappointment brought last season.

Nov. 8 – Little Elm Lobos (0-3)
Nov. 8 - Little Elm Lobos (0-3)

At: Lobo Stadium

Head coach: Robert Brandenburg (first season at Little Elm)

Last season: 1-8 (1-6 in district) Missed Playoffs

Last five against Lewisville: First time matchup

Players to watch:

Offense: Junior wide receiver Carlton Mims (leads team in receiving yards and touchdowns)

Defense: Senior outside linebacker Ryan Martin (leads team in tackles)

The big number: Last win streak was at the end of the 2006-2007 season and the beginning of the 2007-2008 season with a six game winning streak.

Random knowledge: This is the third season in a row Little Elm has had a new head coach.

Non-district games:

32-7 loss vs Frisco (2-2)

63-6 loss vs Walnut Grove (3-0)

31-7 loss vs Berkner (2-1)

The rundown: The Lobos are a defensive minded team with a total of 186 tackles so it’ll be important to work around defenders and make the most out of any yards after the catch that the offense can gain. On the offensive side of the ball, the Lobos run game is inefficient and passing volume is extremely low, so as long as defensive assignments are kept and played well, we can expect a great defensive performance and possibly some turnovers.
