Underclassmen to represent swim team at state

Having already broken two school swim records each, sophomore Ethan McGee and freshman Kara Eisenmann hope to continue to excel at state this weekend on Feb. 21-22 in Austin.

McGee broke the 100 free at regional with a time of 47.31 seconds and the 50 free with a time of 21.32. He will be competing at state for the 50 free.

“I’m excited because I have the opportunity to, at such an young age, to go to state,” McGee said.

This is Mcgee’s first time going to state for the school and to prepare for this tournament he is “sleeping and eating a lot”.

“I’m pretty good at it,” Mcgee said, when asked why he liked the sport. “And it keeps me in shape.”

In her first year on the team, Eisenmann is already making history breaking two school records: the 100 butterfly, which she came in with a time of 54.87, and in the 100 backstroke, which she came in with a time of 56.63. Her achievements not only qualified her for state, but they also qualified her for an All-American status, because she made the championship final, in the top eight.

“I definitely feel very accomplished,” Eisenmann said. “Cause I know that’s a big thing, I’m proud.”

Like McGee, she is also eating more fruits and vegetables to get ready for state as well as getting more sleep by going to bed earlier.

Although she has been doing competitive swimming for about five years now, she said she is still nervous about competing this weekend, but has a simple method to clear her head: think about the race, “so you know what you’re doing.”

Despite the butterflies she gets before a race, her enjoyment for the sport has taken her far.

“I like it because it’s kind of an individual sport,” Eisenmann said. “I like team sports, but I don’t know. I just love being in the water.”
