Staff and varsity tennis players will compete against each other in a tennis match Thursday, April 10. At Harmon’s tennis courts starting at 5 p.m.
“I’m not sure how long tennis has been hosting the matchup but I think for at least 13 years,” tennis coach Deana Johnson said. “We thought it was a great way to get teachers and administrators involved and interested in our LHS Tennis Program, have a great time learning the game and enjoy playing after a long year of hard work.”
For English teacher Adam Cooper, the tennis match allows an opportunity for teachers to get out of their comfort zone in the classroom.
“I like showing students that teachers are more than their classroom’s personas,” English teacher Adam Cooper said. “It allows me to stay connected with past students. Teaching at Killough sometimes creates a chasm between the students once they go off to Main. I am a huge fan of tennis and played a little in high school.”
Though the game is fun for the team, they strive to bring their A-game this Thursday. For varsity tennis player Rocco Richardson, he has his own strategies for success.
“I adjust my game plan by observing how they play,” Richardson said. “Everyone in the team plays differently. Some try to hit hard and get it past you. Some are consistent and wait for you to make the first, or last mistake. Some players participate aggressively, such as jumping or swinging at any ball that comes my way.”
The participants are served dinner, while the winners get a trophy. For Cooper, even though he enjoys the competition, he hopes to see former students.
“I competed two years ago with Angela Fuentes and had a blast,” Cooper said. “I am competing again to obviously see ex-students and hopefully do better than last time.”
