Swimming, diving teams perform well in district

15 Farmers competing in regional meet this weekend

Fifteen members of the swim team performed well enough at district on Jan. 25-26 to advance to region this weekend at the Keller Aquatic Center.

The team has been preparing these last two weeks for the competition. Coach Tom Gargan said last week the team had regular practice and this week they have been working on starts and turns.

The boys diving team secured three out of the six spots available at district to move on to regional meet. The team was lead by senior Sam Williams who took 2nd place, sophomore Brian Fisher placed 4th, and sophomore Nik Baker placed 6th.

“I made it my junior year,” Williams said.  “It really feels good.”

Williams has only been on the team for two years and has already managed to earn the title of captain for the diving team, although he says it’s nothing more than a name.

“It’s more of just a placeholder [like] being [called] sir or madam,” Williams said. “It’s just a title. I mean it comes with a lot of responsibility.”

Williams knows the importance of his role and uses it to better his team.

“I really push my two teammates to really strive for it even if there’s only six people in the top 6 places,” Williams said.  “You’re guaranteed you’ll get those three spots, but I mean they worked hard, no one failed to dive, and they’ve worked their butt as much as I’ve worked mine.”

The swim team had two district champions this year. Freshman Kara Eisenmann took first in the 100 butterfly and sophomore Ethan Mcgee took first in the 100 freestyle. The team also broke two records at the district meet this year.

Senior and captain Lauren Fowler came in 4th in the 50 free with a new school record of 25.19.

“I was pretty excited when I broke the 50 free because I’ve been working really hard at that one,” Fowler said. “I was like point one off last time, so I really wanted to get it.”

She also helped break another record in the 200 free relay along with sophomore Sydney Boyer, junior Francessca Schmitt and Eisenmann.

As one of the captains of the swim team, Fowler said she does her best to motivate the team.

“I try to set an good example and show up to practice every day and show them hard work pays off,” Fowler said.
