Senior Durwan Green slashes to the basket against Hebron on Jan. 31. The Farmers host Marcus in their final regular season game tonight.

With a playoff spot locked up for the Farmers (5-4 district) after their 82-46 victory against Flower Mound on Friday, they face their last district foe tonight at home: Flower Mound Marcus.

Friday’s win gave the Farmers sole possession of third place, but they still need a win over Marcus to lock up the third seed for certain, while Flower Mound and Coppell compete to keep postseason hopes alive for the last playoff spot.

“If Coppell wins, we finish third and Flower Mound and Coppell have to play a play-in game because it would be tied,” head coach Gary Collier said. “And if Flower Mound wins, and we lose, we’ll be tied for third again with Flower Mound, but we’re definitely in the playoffs.”

Collier said the lowest the team can finish is tying for third.

The team has been trying to focus on shooting in the past few games. There was a clear improvement in the score against the Jaguars. Three Farmers scored in double digits. Senior Diamante Langston led the team with 21 points, while junior Anthony Davis chipped in 20. Senior Kaelin Love added 15.

“This is the best we’ve played in a long time,” Collier said. “This is a great time to play this type of game because it’s getting to the time of the season where you want to be playing like we played Friday.”

Not only has the shooting improvement helped, but the team has been reunited for this game. Tuesday against Coppell, starter Caleb Loggins was not playing, and the Friday before then Durwan Green was out to perform in “Footloose.” These are only two examples of the absent players on the team.

“This is the first game we’ve actually been there and everybody’s been to practice,” Collier said. “Everybody’s been on the same page, and because of that I think is the reason we’re starting to play a little bit better.”

With the team’s shooting game now improving, Collier said they are working on being tougher on the court.

“At Marcus, probably the same thing we did against Flower Mound, we’re gonna press a lot more, because I think that’s one thing that we did that we haven’t been doing,” Collier said. “We haven’t been pressing and being real aggressive intentionally trying to trap and steal the ball, so we’re going to play aggressive again Tuesday. I know we’re making the playoffs no matter what, win or lose, so we shouldn’t have any pressure on us. It’s a matter of everyone going out and having fun and just playing hard.”

With the Marauders secured in second and the Farmers secured in third, Collier views the game as a way for the team to build on improvement, and have some fun with their rival. The Farmers won the first meeting in double overtime, 81-74. Langston led all scorers with 31 in the comeback victory. Davis had 15 and junior Marquis Williams had 13.

The Marauders were led in the first game by their top two scorers. Michael Mayhew scored 29 and Xavier Adams had 20.

“It’s a game to build on,” Collier said. “A game to continue to work on some things that we need to do. Marcus is going to come out pressing.”
