Sophomore Kyra Franklin prepares to spike the ball during first period volleyball practice on Thursday, Oct. 17.

Before facing off in non-district play, the volleyball players worked to strengthen the team’s bond. Now the team is moving on to improving court communication. With a record of [10-27] and a district record of [2-6], the team has pushed to overcome its recent losses and focuses on ending the season with a strong finish.

“I knew what kind of team we had and knew we had to put in a lot of work,” sophomore Kyra Franklin said. “[We as a team have worked on] communication [and] trusting each other. We had a lot of drop balls and mistakes because people weren’t talking on the court.”

The girls worked on improving communication with the younger and more experienced players this year. The team has also applied tactics toward achieving personal goals along with overall team targets.

“Being with a new team, they’ve overcome getting to know each other and being able to mesh well with each other,” head coach Cara Sumpter said. “I think one of our greatest assets is [talking] through things and [overcoming] a lot of adversity. [We] all learn to fight toward one circle.”

The girls’ main goal and focus has always been unifying the team and learning to work together. Their next game is Friday, Oct. 18 against Irving at Irving High School.

“We all have that fight in us during the game, and even when it’s a hard game, we still keep up and we’re able to take one step away from them,” senior captain Audrey Rodriguez said. “If we do that with every game we play, I feel like we could take off three steps from them and win the whole game. I feel like that could be our push at the end of this season.”
