“Outer Banks” season 4 has been an emotional roller coaster for the fandom. The wait wasn’t long for the new season, but there was definitely much anticipation. This season left many fans happy and others upset.
Season 4 picks up right after ‘the pogues’ have returned from their thrilling hunt for ‘El Dorado’ in South America. They cash out the gold for money and are quick to spend it on buying back JJ Maybanks’ family land to turn it into Pougelandia 2.0. to which JJ bid more than half of their money on. A lot of fans started the hate train on JJ because of how childish and spontaneous he was acting. The remaining part of the money didn’t last long, until JJ once again bet on himself in a dirt bike race against the kooks, who are the wealthiest kids in the land.
Once getting somewhat back to a normal life, a sketchy stranger asks them for help to find Blackbeard’s treasure. Though at first, the pogues were on the fence about accepting a new adventure, given they just got back from their previous adventure and have already been through a lot, they needed to make up the money lost from the bidding and the bet. But again, John B., JJ, Pope, Kie, Cleo and Sara are all on the move. They’ve scheduled to meet with the mysterious rich man, Wes Genrette, at his mansion to discuss the mission in more detail, which turned out to be the beginning of the downfall for the group. Up to this point, his vibe was super off, when the crew got to his house the energy felt so low and unsafe.
Wes explains how he wants to pay the pogues to find the Blackbeard treasure because his family is descended from the captain who killed Blackbeard and his wife. He thinks his family is now being haunted by the ghost of blackbeard’s wife and that caused the death of his daughter and is afraid he will too.
They come to an agreement on a price and the excitement begins.
The pogues dive in the ocean to locate the treasure, in which they end up finding a gold amulet belonging to Blackbeard’s wife. It just so happened to be the item Wes wanted them to find. The amulet has a message written in Arabic on it, which they need to get translated.
The only problem during this is they’re unfortunately not the only ones looking for the rare necklace and some (unnamed) bad guys actually end up stealing the amulet from the pogues. This aftermath leads to Cleo getting kidnapped by the bad guys where she’s reunited with Terrance, who is a father figure to her. By the end of the season, the pogues are looking for clues to the location of Blackbeard’s blue crown, where then Sara and Pope are locked inside an underground burial in the cemetery where there’s water quickly flooding. Up to this point the bad guys go to the same place as the pogues and use the amulet to unlock the grave to find a map. The major cliffhanger from this season is that JJ’s parents aren’t actually his parents and he is rather the grandson of Wes Genrette, led to believe Chandler Genrette’s son in law, is his father. In part two, JJ Maybank is killed off by his own father while retreating Blackbeard’s crown to the pogues.
Honestly, this new season up to the last two episodes are decent. There were higher expectations from the new season; fans wished for something deeper and more thrilling. It feels like the same thing over and over again. The season has the same concept from the beginning: getting a new treasure to find, going out to look for it, roadblocks happen, they overcome and then the end. The third season had a stronger, more interesting plot. Chase found out his dad was still alive, the pogues travel all the way to South America to find ‘El Dorado,’ and in the end no one important was killed off.
The last two episodes were not it. Fans of Outer Banks are fuming with anger all over social media sharing they don’t think the ending was the best and that they deserved more. The whole concept of the show was to have the core four who are originally Chase, Pope, Kie and JJ. Killing off a main character is destroying the entire plot.
If you’re still interested in knowing what happened with the pogues after ‘El Dorado’ from season 3, then continue watching with season 4. If not, just ending off at season 3 would be fine because nothing all that new or interesting really happens.
