World-renowned Australian pop rock band 5 Seconds of Summer released its sixth studio album, ‘EVERYONE’S A STAR!,’ on Nov. 14. The group previously released two singles, “boyband” (released on Oct. 16) and “Telephone busy” (released on Oct. 23), which were later added on the album. The album was released months after guitarist Michael Clifford and bass guitarist Calum Hood released their own solo albums. Pop rock is generally a subgenre 5SOS showcases its influence on and their new album is here to prove it.
The album consistently reflects on the elements of evolving with change and a sense of loneliness. “NOT OK” touches on those certain topics with notable lyrics such as “And when my heart slows down, will you pick me up?” The song talks about having codependency on someone for a sense of affection while not having any positive outcomes from it. This song seems to be seen from a vulnerable perspective of codependency and reliance.
Other songs like “I’m Scared I’ll Never Sleep Again” and “istillfeelthesame” fall under the same categories of loneliness and change, yet countering their lyrics with loud guitar rims and banging drums. While 5SOS is known for upbeat pop rock instrumentals, songs on this album’s lyrics counter the instrumental.
This album is inspired by artists like N.E.R.D, Gorillaz and The Prodigy, while still bringing that 5SOS vibe the group has always had. Additionally, the title ‘EVERYONE’S A STAR!’, is meant to describe the feeling of breaking free of boundaries and becoming oneself carefree.
Overall, the album was an amazing experience to listen to. The emotional vulnerable lyrics mixing in with the hype instrumentals and fast tempo brings in that 5SOS feeling that everyone knows(?). ‘EVERYONE’S A STAR’ deserves an 8 out of 10.
