Former LHS basketball player and current Utah Jazz player Keyonte George will attend and receive recognition during a pre-game ceremony at the basketball game Friday, Jan. 16. The ceremony will include Mayor TJ Gilmore, principal Jim Baker and several other district administrators.
The ceremony will happen before the game against Little Elm at 7 p.m. The ceremony aims to not only recognize George’s basketball career but also his relationship with Lewisville.
“He’s a really nice person, playing at the highest level you can possibly play at,” Baker said. “He wanted to come home and have a night where he’s giving some things to the high school, and we’re recognizing him for his impact on the community. What a great message to send that no matter what you’re doing you can come and give back.”
George’s visit aims to uplift other young basketball players in the school.
“His homecoming means a lot for the school and the community,” head basketball coach La’Ryan Gary said. “For someone growing up in this community and having success here in the city of Lewisville and the state of Texas, it is impactful for the younger kids to see all of his hard work firsthand.”
As a freshman and sophomore, George played for the school basketball team, now wanting to come back to where it all started.
“These moments can be powerful to say the least,” Gary said. “It helps connect the past, to the present, to future kids who will be in attendance.”
The event serves to bring the town together.
“It means to the masses that we recognize how important our school is to our kids, community, teachers, staff and families,” Baker said. “That Lewisville High School has always been a hub for the community.”
George’s work proves to have an everlasting impact on the school.
“We’re all Farmers,” assistant principal Nathan Hawes said. “Farmers can now know people who came before them are still encouraged by where they started. It helps people understand just because you start somewhere, doesn’t mean you’re going to finish there.”
