The Lewisville Farmers defeated the Mansfield Summit Jaguars 51-7 to start their 2024 campaign 1-0. The team faces the Byron Nelson Bobcats on Thursday night at 7.
The Jaguars started off the game with possession. The drive that lasted 4 minutes and 52 seconds of game time came to a halt when Lewisville’s defense forced a turnover on downs at their own 30 yard line.
The Farmers responded with a drive that lasted 4 minutes and 15 seconds and resulted in a touchdown for the Farmers.
From there, the Farmers never looked back by putting up 44 unanswered points, having allowed one touchdown in the fourth quarter to the Jaguars.
“It all starts with our guys up front,” co-offensive coordinator Nathaniel Blackwell said. “Michael Fasusi, Sean Hutton, Aidan Murphy, Malachi Mclennon, Kylan Masters and Luke Hudson led the way up front. Tenel Hill, Derrick Martin and Isaiah Wilson ran the ball tough and broke several tackles. Our tight ends, Landon Bogany and Dylan Johnston, did a lot of the dirty work by blocking for runs and screens.”
Senior Dylan Johnston knows there’s still work to be done, especially in the blocking game.
“I think I did pretty good,” Johnston said. “It’s the first game, so there’s always going to be a few mistakes. But I feel like I put my team in the best possible position. I’m a new tight end, so I have to go against the bigger D-lineman. So, I can always get better at that.”
The Farmers offense put up a total of six touchdowns, with three touchdowns rushing and passing. Junior Tenel Hill led the squad in rushing with 91 yards on 14 carries and one touchdown. Senior Isaiah Wilson and sophomore Derrick Martin also accompanied him with one rushing touchdown each. The three of them totaled 172 yards on the ground with an average of 6.14 yards per carry.
Sophomore quarterback Tre Williams had his second start in his career, and the first of his 2024-2025 season.
“Tre had several completions for big gains and controlled our tempo well,” Blackwell said. “He saw the field well and played within himself. As he progresses this season, he will continue to grow and get more comfortable in this offense. He’s a smart player with a high upside.”
Williams went 17-27 in the air, totaling 281 yards and three passing touchdowns. One pass was picked off by the Jaguars defense. Sophomore JT Thomas led the team in receiving with four receptions, 103 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore Noah McNeil caught one reception on a 30-yard touchdown pass.
The Farmer defense held the Summit offense to 184 total yards, including forcing four turnovers and one fumble in the end zone for a Farmer touchdown in their second offensive drive.
On Thursday, Sept. 5, the Farmers will face the Byron Nelson Bobcats, who went state regional runner-up in the 2023-2024 playoffs before falling to Southlake Carroll. The Bobcats beat their week one opponent Frenship 48-46, who also lost to Southlake Carroll in the second round of the playoffs last year.
“Byron Nelson is coming off a historic season and will return with a solid defense,” Blackwell said. “Our challenge is to remain focused and stay disciplined. We have a very young offense and each game will help us gain experience.”
