Get to know Number 8 Diego Fernandez Morales as he reflects on his high school experience

Q: How does being so smart just come to you? How much of an effect of playing video games have that on you?

A:I believe it’s because I think through things a lot. Such as when solving problems, I like to think of all the different possibilities and see what’s the best option. Playing video games probably helps with this because it forces me to focus on multiple things at once, and in video games there’s a lot of different outcomes that can occur so I take those scenarios into account as well.”

Q: What is your favorite food?

A: “Spaghetti, it doesn’t matter what kind, I like them all.”

Q: What’s the most obscure fact you know?

A:I don’t remember any obscure facts. They usually pop up randomly in my mind during the middle of a conversation.”

Q: What’s your favorite video game and why?

A:Hollow Knight because it’s a pretty challenging game and the action is fun. The map is big and has a lot to explore even though it’s a 2D game. I also like the art style and the music.”

Q: If you had only a week left to live, how would you spend your last seven days on earth?

A:I would just spend time with my family and friends. I would also eat my favorite food and try to visit some places I haven’t been to.”

Q: What college will you attend? What is your intended major?

A:I will attend the University of Texas at Dallas and will major in mechanical engineering.”

Q: What extracurriculars have you been in throughout high school?

A:I’ve mostly just been involved in volunteer service activities for the school.”

Q: What was the most challenging aspect about balancing extracurriculars and academics?

A:Being able to manage my time so I could still finish my work since I typically procrastinate.”

Q: What class was the hardest for you? Why?

A:AP Chemistry because the content was confusing to me. I took the class my sophomore year and my studying habits weren’t as good back then so this made the class even harder since I didn’t read the textbook as much as I should’ve.”

Q: Who has helped you the most throughout this journey? How have they? 

A:My parents and my brother. My parents have been really encouraging and supportive and my brother has always been there to help me.”

Q: What has been the most memorable part of high school?

A:Meeting all my friends and spending time with them.”

Q: What do you miss most about traditional high school over at-home learning?

A:I miss being able to talk to people in person instead of just hearing them online.”

Q: What advice would you give to your freshman self? 

A:I would tell my freshman self to stop procrastinating so much and to develop a good sleep schedule.”

Q: What are you most excited about regarding college?

A:I’m excited for the classes that are offered since I can take more classes that relate to my major. I feel like there’s also more independence in college than in high school so I’m excited for that as well.”

Q: Where do you hope to see yourself in 10 years?

A:In 10 years I hope to see myself being done with school and with a good-paying job. I don’t know where yet but hopefully it’s a job I truly enjoy.”
