As a part of Teen Tech week, the Library Media Center, or LMC, will be hosting a “photo a day contest” on Tumblr.com for the chance to win a free silver iPod shuffle.

This contest will consist of a revealing of a secret key word every day starting March 4 and ending March 10. The word of the day must be represented in a photo taken by the contestant and posted on Tumblr, a blogging and social networking site.

Rules for the contest are as follows: Students must have Internet access and a means of taking photos. All photo entries must be an original work and taken between March 4 and March 10. Photos must be uploaded to Tumblr by 11:45 p.m., central time, each day after the word is released. An entry form can be submitted as many times as needed at http://goo.gl/UPY91 by March 10 at 11:45 p.m.

Each day’s word can be found on the front page of Farhar.net.

Any teens aged 13-18 years who have permission from a parent or guardian may enter. The entries will be judged by district high school librarians for creativity, how well the image articulates the secret word, and whether or not all of the guidelines and rules have been followed. Winners will be notified on March 12 and will receive the iPod shuffle and have their winning photos posted on the Library Media Center Facebook page.

Library-media specialist Brandi Rosales said she chose Tumblr because it is a large blogging site with a growing community, which combines the features of text post blogging and media blogging.

“I like the blog feature that comes with it,” Rosales said. “It’s not just photos. You can put quotes into it or text or video.”

Along with the perk of receiving a free iPod shuffle, students are encouraged to participate in this contest in the spirit of Teen Tech Week and to be exposed to new technology, Rosales said.

“These days, libraries are not just seen as print materials, it’s also electronic media,” Rosales said.
